To mark its 10-year anniversary, Atomnation founder head Pascal Terstappen aka Applescal has put together a special 20-track retrospective and designed a limited edition t-shirt and tote bag in collaboration with Remco van Dun. Featuring a cross-section of associated artists old and new, the compilation tells the tale of a label always evolving while staying true to its original mission to release crossover electronic music rich in melody and high in quality.

This collection has been in the works for a while, such was the eagerness of Terstappen to get it exactly right. Although not keen on celebrating milestones and self-hype, this collection stands alone as a great testament to a proudly independent label that has shunned common trends, avoided the obvious, and managed to serve up well over 100 releases, all with a cohesive overall sound.

Founded in Amsterdam in 2012 by Terstappen and Guido Hollaers, it later become a solo project for Terstappen and is now run out of Tilburg but with a worldwide family of artists. Each one has their own unique sound but one that fits in with the Atomnation vision for vibrant sounds and timeless grooves. Deep house, techno, electro, broken beat and ambient have all featured but with an always artful edge: the label has never been a place for throwaway tools, but instead for accomplished sounds that pair the emotional and the physical with great craft.

Albums have formed the backbone of the Atomnation discography with standout long players from the likes of Gidge, Awe Kid, Tunnelvisions, Sky Civilian, and many more, while more club-ready singles have come thick and fast from those same artists as well as mainstays such as boys be kko, Mordisco and remixers including Gerd Janson, Dauwd, Paula Tape and Fort Romeau.

The label will now enter hiatus for a while, but not before this vital retrospective. It explores every facet of the label's sound and features not only essential standout tracks but plays out as a great musical journey. There are zoned-out sonic daydreams, prickly broken beats, found sound grooves and sublime fusions of the synthetic and the organic from all of the key characters that have made the Atomnation story as special as it is.

This anniversary compilation is not the ultimate end, but instead just the end of the start.

This is about as seamless a suite of songs and moods as you're likely to hear. The album feels self-propelled, so effortlessly does it move from track to track and style to style. It's Hopkins-like in its diverse fluidity. Rarely is production this precise melded with performances that are equally so. Not only can these guys play, but they can think.
