Sky Civilian returns to Atomnation for 'More Than Lonely,' a stunning new single that wrenches at the heart.

Sky Civilian is Maggie Thornton, an artist from Santa Fe, New Mexico who has dropped several EPs and singles on Atomnation since 2019. She is an accomplished musician with a decade of orchestral French horn playing under her belt as well as time spent teaching music theory. She makes music on a humble set that includes just a piano, horn, synth, laptop, and her voice, but always manages to conjure up sincere emotions.

This new single was written and recorded in 2018 as a letter to a close family member who was experiencing a mental health crisis. Both musically and lyrically it speaks to those experiences of desperation, fear, and sadness, "but also the overwhelming and sometimes naive desire to fix and understand," says Sky. "I hope this song makes it easier for myself and others to speak about challenging things like suicide."

The single itself is six minutes of soothing piano and rich synth work that aims to comfort and uplift at the same time. The weightless, almost hyper-real vocals are gentle in delivery but impactful in their message. The melodies and smeared chords convey a sense of loss and longing as the downtempo drums provide a warming cushion for broken hearts.

'More Than Lonely' is a single in which many people will find real solace.

This is about as seamless a suite of songs and moods as you're likely to hear. The album feels self-propelled, so effortlessly does it move from track to track and style to style. It's Hopkins-like in its diverse fluidity. Rarely is production this precise melded with performances that are equally so. Not only can these guys play, but they can think.
